Small, agile, and dexterous, Etecoons are cute monkey-like creatures. This peaceful and playful animal has no intent to harm Samus, and displays intelligence higher than that of a chimpanzee. When you first encounter them, they climb up a very long shaft, which you must then learn how to Wall Jump in order to proceed. In a way, the Etecoons “teach” Samus the Wall Jump technique.

Following the Etecoons through a small tunnel at the top of the shaft leads to a Power Bomb. During the final escape sequence after killing Mother Brain, you can save the Dachora and Etecoons by going to the room where you met the Gray Torizo and shooting the wall. The game rewards you for doing this by showing a small purple pixel escape from Zebes right before it explodes.

When you first meet the Etecoons, they sing the Metroid Item Collect Jingle.
