The Namihe, and its counterpart, the Fune, are serpent-like creatures that live and dig through the rock walls of Zebes. When you encounter a Namihe, only its head is visible, but their bodies are quite long. Their multisegmented, accordion-like exoskeleton allows their bodies to expand and contract, which can get them through tight spaces with ease. Much like the Fune, a Namihe can expectorate a substance which will ignite into blue flame the moment it comes in contact with the air.
A Namihe's hide is so tough that nothing Samus has can destroy it. Fortunately, due to their preference of extremely hot climates, they are susceptible to cold. Namihes can even survive in boiling lava.
Namihes cannot be destroyed. They can, however, be frozen. Shoot your Ice Beam at one to temporarily freeze it so you can sneak past.
It wasn't until Fusion when the Fune and Namihe could stretch out of their holes to attack, revealing their long bodies. Their design is also reminiscent of the Xenomorphs from the Alien films.
