Crocomire

Boss
  • Crocomire
Artist: el-roacho
Planet
Zebes
Region
Norfair

While this large terrestrial creature lives deep within the hostile environment of Norfair, it isn’t a lava-dweller like the Magdollites, and seems to be quite sensitive to extreme or prolonged heat exposure. There are few suitable chambers to accommodate the Crocomire, and its territorial plight is further complicated by its short legs and stocky profile, which limits the amount of terrain that it can navigate. To counter this, some have speculated whether the Crocomire uses its long arms to scrape away at the rock walls or otherwise form tunnels that it can comfortably traverse. Meals don’t wander into a Crocomire’s lair too often, so it has to try and conserve its energy until a potential meal presents itself….

Crocomire will excitedly try to reach out and attack with its thin long arms, so keep a safe distance and repeatedly shoot missiles or charged beams into its mouth whenever it opens. Samus’s ability to aim diagonally upward allows easy access to its weak point without having to jump. Each hit will make the Crocomire steadily retreat backward (Super Missiles being more effective than the regular), but if given a refrain, the creature will start moving forward again, and even try to spit out plasma projectiles. Stay on the offensive until the Crocomire is driven off the bridge at the back of the room.

In one of the MDb’s translated interviews, the developers of Super Metroid joked about how the visual design of creatures like the Crocomire made them look somewhat cute, and might make some players feel sympathy when killing them.
