Spore Spawn

Boss
  • Spore Spawn
Planet
Zebes
Region
Brinstar

The miniboss of Brinstar and the second miniboss Samus encounters. This hulking, carnivorous plant was genetically engineered by the Space Pirates. The Spore Spawn’s only weak point is its core, which it uses to draw in other creatures in order to feed. Once the Spore Spawn shuts its “mouth”, no creature can escape from it. Its outer shell is extremely tough, and cannot be damaged by any of Samus’s weaponry, and its spores, composed of a highly caustic resin, are dangerous to touch.

Spore Spawn is one of the easiest bosses in the game, but can be quite deadly if you’re not careful. It moves in a figure-eight pattern, stopping now and then to open its large mouth. When it does this, use your Missiles and try to shoot two directly at its core. As you wear down Spore Spawn, it will begin to move faster and faster. Roll into a ball to avoid it completely, but don’t forget about the small spores that slowly trickle down from the ceiling. Shoot them to regain health and Missiles. After you defeat the Spore Spawn, you can collect a Super Missile tank.

Kenji Yamamoto provided his own voice in creating the Spore Spawn’s distinct wail.

Wall-jumping off the Spore Spawn’s dead husk will cause it to vibrate, but there’s no direct usefulness for doing so.

The Puddle Spore and Dark Phlogus from Metroid Prime 1 and 2 both highly resemble the Spore Spawn.
