Samus Eater
- Planet
- Zebes
- Region
- Brinstar
These carnivorous plants are easily one of the most terrifying life forms of Zebes. At a distance, their large flower petals may seem decorative and relatively appealing when viewed against the backdrop of their spiky root system, but don’t be fooled. Ordinary prey that fall inside these plants are usually incapable of escaping, as the victim’s bodies are painfully engulfed by layers of thorns, as well as caustic digestive fluids that will start to seep in from the base. Trying to leverage themselves out of the Eater’s grasp could further tear even more flesh, and most prey are too injured to continue struggling. Their digested carcasses supply ample nutrition to the Eater’s extensive network of thickly exposed roots, and is a poignant reminder of Brinstar’s hostile ecosystem.
Samus Eaters can’t be killed, so the best strategy is to watch your step. Be careful not to jump too high when in rooms that have thorns on the ceiling, and try to shoot any other nearby creatures that may bump Samus into the Eater’s mouth. If Samus does fall in, wait a few moments for the Eater to loosen its grasp on her armor, then jump out.
Yapping Maws will sometimes help Samus Eaters easily catch their prey, and a completely hollow (or dead) Samus Eater has also been found in one of these areas. Eaters closely resemble giant Rafflesia flowers, with the same petal and hollow body form.
