Evolved cousin to the Chute Leech. These massive cephalopod-like creatures live in the dangerous liquid, where they hunt for small creatures that wander into their caves. They will often float just below the surface of the liquid, maintaining a 360 degree view of the surface with their large eyes. Despite their size, Octrolls are easily startled and will suddenly leap into the air, fluttering back and forth wildly to frighten potential predators. They will also use this tactic to leap on top of smaller organisms, grabbing hold of them with their large tentacles. Octrolls are communal and thought to be highly intelligent, but none has ever been captured for research due to their location deep within SR388.

Tp>Octrolls are located in the dark caverns leading up to Ruins Area III and the Sewer System. They behave identically to the Chute Leech, but are far larger and so will deal a large amount of damage on impact, as well as float back and forth over longer distances. However, their large size makes them easy to hit, and they will drop 20 Energy infrequently. They are best dispatched with high-powered Beams or Missiles, Frozen, or avoided altogether.

The Japanese instruction manual states the Octroll is “Usually docile, but flutters about and attacks when Samus draws near.” This information was omitted in the North American instruction manual.

In the first tunnel in which the Octroll appears, speed runners may want to roll into a ball and roll through the acid to reach the far side more quickly.
