An energy-based life-form with a translucent upper body. Claw-like spikes protrude from the lower half of the creature, which it uses to latch onto its prey. Fission Metroids are mutant Metroids with the ability to split into two forms. This split endows the new creatures with invulnerability to most weaponry. This effect is unstable, resulting in weakness to one particular type of weapon fire. The vulnerability appears to be random, perhaps due to the chaotic nature of Phazon Mutation.

When a Fission Metroid splits, pay attention to what color they take to know how to kill it. They will randomly take on a vulnerability to one of your Beam weapons, determined by its color. Switch to the correct Beam to destroy it.

Yellow = Power Beam

Purple = Wave Beam

Light Blue = Ice Beam

Red = Plasma Beam

Note that Fission Metroids can also be defeated with Power Bombs, which is particularly useful when there are many around you at once.

In the PAL release and Trilogy version, Fission Metroids were added to a room in the Phazon Mines. They are not present in this room in the North American Gamecube version.
