The Space Pirate is a sentient aggressor species that is well trained in weapon and melee combat. Space Pirates wield Galvanic Accelerator Cannon and forearm-mounted Scythes in combat. This species seeks to become the dominant force in the galaxy, and their technology may help them realize this goal. Ruthless and amoral, the Pirates care little for the cost of their ambition. Only the results matter, and they take these very seriously.
Space Pirates have long range attacks from their Galvanic Accelerator Cannons and short range attacks from their Scythes, with the latter dealing more damage. Space Pirates can be best defeated by rapidly dodging with B and either firing from a distance or circling them and shooting them from medium range. They can also be frozen with a fully-charged Ice Beam and shattered in one hit with a Missile. Space Pirates are only problematic if Samus is equipped with weaker beams and they attack in large numbers. If this happens, try to take them out as quickly as possible using Missiles.
Note: The Space Pirates Samus encounters on the Frigate Orpheon have been wounded by Parasite attacks and so are much easier to dispatch. However, watch out for the ones that have Cannons still active!
While the Metroid Prime instruction manual calls the Space Pirates "interstellar nomads", they were later given a homeworld in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
The Space Pirate designs for Metroid Prime have three-fingered hands, as opposed to the lobster claw "crab" type found in Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid: Other M, and the official Metroid Manga. The Pirates instead attack with beam weapons and Scythes. However, concept art showing the "crab" type can be found in Metroid Prime's instruction manual. All Space Pirate designs in Metroid Prime also have flaming eyes. These new designs might be explained away as a "Phazon mutation"...
Samus first fights the Space Pirates on the Frigate Orpheon introductory stage, but the Pirates she encounters have been wounded in combat with the Parasites. The real battles occur once Samus first enters the Hydra and Aether labs via the room Research Entrance. Here, a special version of their theme, "Space Pirates (Laboratory Gate)" plays as a tense introduction to the main battle theme.
