Geruta are the top predators of Norfair. These massive creatures have a carapace shaped like a crab’s, but their shells glow at high temperatures from the large amounts of energy stored within; Samus will take damage just from casual contact with the creatures. Geruta are especially dangerous because they propel themselves through the air at high speeds by shooting flames from their feet. After lunging themselves at their prey, they grab them using their large pincers, pulling them apart and tearing off bits to the mouth located on the underside of the body.

Geruta have the same attack patterns as the Rio, flying up when Samus jumps. However, their armor is thicker, making them a tougher opponent. Geruta will also often appear within rooms containing lots of small platforms over a lava pit, so it is usually best to destroy them with a missile or Screw Attack through them.

Red ones are twice as strong as the pink ones.

Geruta is yet another Metroid creature that falls to into the "mistranslated" category. The creature was named "Geruta" in North America where it is actually "Geruda" in Japanese texts. Da (ダ) and Ta (タ) are written the same, but the special Dakuten marks signify it to be read as "Dah" and thus could have been an easy oversight of the localizer.
