Omega Metroid

Hostile
  • Omega Metroid
Planet
SR388
Region
Main Caverns, Omega Zone

This is the adult form of the Metroid. They are located in the deepest reaches of the hive and serve as “royal guards” for the Queen. These fully-grown mutations have massive arms and legs, and their vastly increased size has made them incredibly formidable. Omega Metroids can give rending blows with their powerful talons and can crush most creatures within their terrible jaws. The Omega Metroid's acidic saliva glands have also become far more developed, allowing them to spit larger globules than the Zeta Metroid over longer distances. Omega Metroids also have four eyes instead of three, giving them better eyesight for hunting in the darker reaches of the caves.

The Omega Metroid's carapace has also strengthened considerably. Like the Zeta Metroid, their stomachs and back can be punctured by high explosive projectiles, but their carapaces are weaker just below the back of the neck. If cold beam weapons are not available, it is recommended to stealthily approach the Omega Metroid from behind and strike it in this position with missiles and other explosive rounds of extremely high capacity. Frontal attacks have so far proven ineffective...

The large size of the Omega Metroid requires that they consume vast amounts of energy, and a single Omega Metroid can quickly depopulate the native wildlife of an area. For this reason, they are very territorial and also small in number; only three have ever been spotted in the wild. However, the Queen Metroid's pheromones also seem to contribute to this factor, preventing Zeta Metroids from molting to a higher form in order to check the population.

You will encounter only three Omega Metroids in the game, but each will be a very taxing fight. For new players, it is recommended to stock up on Missiles and Energy after each fight as opposed to attempting to take on two - or three - in a row.

The Omega Metroid's weak spot is the large bulge on its back. Hitting this with a Missile will deal considerably more damage than striking it in the front - in this fashion, Omega Metroids can be defeated with only 14 Missiles. Otherwise, they will take about 40 to defeat.

Omega Metroids are larger, but also slower than the Zeta Metroids and will not swoop as often. They will also fire large balls of acid that will explode on impact, but these can be easily avoided with the Screw Attack. This makes it possible to maneuver behind them using the Screw Attack and fire well-placed shots at their backs. As with the Zeta Metroid, one good strategy is to Screw Attack in the air around them to jostle for position behind and fire several missiles before they change direction.

The Omega Metroid in Metroid Fusion was vulnerable to the Ice Beam - a strategy that was not available in Metroid II. This could have been because Samus was not able to combine beams - a Plasma + Ice combination would do incredibly more damage than a standard blast. The Omega Metroid in Fusion also did not seem capable of flight; however, this could have been due to the narrow confines of the hangar.
