This small but aggressive creature is covered with flames. Fiercely territorial, it will swoop down and attack anything that comes close. Similar to the Mellow, they live in groups and will often swarm their prey to bring it down.
Mellas are the weakest enemies in Norfair. They can be killed by a single shot from the Normal Beam. However, they can be difficult to hit because they can pass through walls. They appear in the upper regions of Norfair near missile expansions, but will not leave energy behind once destroyed.
In Metroid: Other M, Mellas were given hives similar to the Mellow.
