Summary

A collaborative effort between Tecmo’s Team Ninja and Nintendo called “Project M,” Metroid: Other M is the latest game in the Metroid universe. The interquel is set between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, and chronicles the events that took place between the two games. It will also shed some light on the backstory of Samus Aran.

Nintendo Power (August 2010)

Nintendo Power issue featuring Metroid: Other M. Contains a feature called “Ultimate Metroid” ranking the games in the series from worst to best and listing favorite bosses, music, etc.

Iwata Asks: Metroid: Other M (August 2010)

Three-volume interview of the popular Iwata Asks series. Volume 1 discusses the high-level work of Other M’s three creative directors, Yoshio Sakamoto, Yosuke Hayashi, and Ryuji Kitaura from D-Rockets. Volume 2 is a lengthy discussion between the development staff of Nintendo, Tecmo, and Taiyo Kikaku employees regarding their experiences collaborating on the game. There is also a final, special volume that consists of an interview between Yoshio Sakamoto and Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy) about their past collaborations on the Famicom Disk System game, Nakayama Miho no Tokimeki High School. Volume 3 was never available on Nintendo of America’s Iwata Asks website, but was translated and distributed through Nintendo’s UK site.

Yoshio Sakamoto Keynote: “From Metroid to Tomodachi Collection to WarioWare: Different Approaches for Different Audiences” (March 2010)

This is Mr. Sakamoto’s famous keynote from the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco. While the MDb had previously published notes from the lecture, Nintendo of Europe has published the entire keynote, complete with slides in their Iwata Asks section. The article is very revealing of Mr. Sakamoto’s history at Nintendo and game design philosophy, exploring how one man can create both serious and comedic games. Mr. Sakamoto emphasized the use of timing for both horror and comedy as well as his influences from Italian horror filmmaker Dario Argento.

Metroid: Other M Developer Interview (August 2010)

Video. Nintendo ran an official interview with Yoshio Sakamoto, Yosuke Hayashi, and Ryuji Kitaura regarding the development process behind Metroid. The Japanese Minna no Nintendo Channel version is longer than the American Nintendo Channel version. The full Japanese version was officially translated by Nintendo of Europe. An alternate translation was done by CapCom (remember to turn on closed captioning to view subtitles).

Metroid: Other M – Yosuke Hayashi Interview (Metroid Headquarters, June 2011)
Video. Elias Thompson of Metroid Headquarters asks some hard questions about the reception of Metroid: Other M as well as its development process. This interview was also conducted at A-kon. These are the two last-known interviews conducted with Other M’s development staff regarding the game and the first interviews to ever be conducted with Japanese staff by a Metroid fansite.
