Kiwi Talkz – DoctorM64 interview
New Zealand-based Kiwi Talkz is back again this time with the creator and lead developer of AM2R, a game some consider to be the best Metroid fangame ever made.
Here’s an idea: Instead of reading headlines and skimming for juicy soundbytes, why don’t you watch the entire thing? You might learn something.
Nintendo eShop Closure
Nintendo finally and inevitably announced the date in which they will be closing the eShop for good. This includes both the WiiU and 3DS eShops: March 2023.
As of late March 2023, it will no longer be possible to make Nintendo eShop purchases for the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

People are upset because this means people won’t be able to “officially” access the library of potentially hundreds of games which are only available through their respective eShops without having to resort to piracy. On the other hand, Nintendo is a company that runs a business, and don’t have infinite money. Sad they can’t offer a better solution, but is it really their responsibility?
I do think preservation is important, but what likely matters more to Nintendo is that they aren’t going into the red. Sometimes tough decisions need to be made, and this is one of them. And we all knew the eShop wasn’t going to be around forever.
Regardless of where you stand on this issue, currently the only way you can officially purchase and play digital versions of the following Metroid games are through the eShops. Get ’em before they’re gone; you have barely more than a year left.
- Metroid Prime Trilogy – WiiU eShop
- Metroid Other M – WiiU eShop
- Metroid Prime Hunters – WiiU eShop
- Metroid – Wii U / 3DS eShop
- Metroid II: Return of Samus – 3DS eShop
- Super Metroid – Wii U / 3DS eShop (“NEW” 3DS models only)
- Metroid Fusion – WiiU eShop
- Metroid Zero Mission – WiiU eShop
- Metroid Prime Federation Force – 3DS eShop
- Metroid Samus Returns – 3DS eShop
Metroid and Super Metroid are also currently available as titles through Nintendo Switch Online subscription service.
Lastly, I’ll say you’re free to disagree with me, no one has to agree all the time. I just don’t think this is as bad as everyone’s making it out to be.
Metroid Dread Update – Today!
Announced today during the Nintendo Direct, Metroid Dread will receive an update today, completely free!
It will add:
- Dread Mode (1 hit kills)
- Rookie Mode (easy mode)
- And they also announced Boss Rush mode releasing in April!
Dread Sales Figures
Nintendo released its annual financial report. In the report you can see that since launch through December, Dread has sold 2.74M copies, making it the 2nd-highest selling Metroid title (1st being Prime).
This is great news and we hope Dread sales continue. Considering it’s just shy of 10k less than Prime’s overall sales, Dread is very poised to surpass it. At least give us some new cool Metroid merch, please, Nintendo?

MAGFest 2022 Panel
MAGFest panel! Big thanks to Dan Cattell for hosting the panel and inviting me and Carl to be a part of it. Had a great time! Panel was done at the Gaylord Convention Center in National Harbor, MD on January 6, 2022.
Kiwi Talkz – Richard Vorodi
Reece of Kiwi Talkz is back once again with a former lead developer of the Prime series. This time it’s Richard Vorodi, a man who was responsible for the design and story of Metroid Prime Hunters. Richard’s AAA game dev career is very high caliber, starting him at NST, and later going to Vigil (Darksiders, Darksiders II) Crytek USA, and is now working for Gunfire Games (Darksiders III, Remnant, Chronos).
The interview is enthralling and Mr. Vorodi shows he is a man who is immensely positive and optimistic about his job and the industry in general. Another wonderful podcast to listen to.
You may also notice a stunning sketch of Samus behind Richard as he conducts the interview. Keen eyes will recognize this was drawn by Tomoyoshi Yamane, a lead designer/artist in the world of Metroid who’s been working on the series since M2RoS.
