Happy Mother’s Day with a visit with the real Mother Brain

We had the pleasure of working closely with one of Facebook/Discord mods, Carl, (aka Object Oriented Props) who has created one of the greatest known pieces of wearable Metroid fan-art: a nearly-life size Mother Brain “pixel” costume.

Last January at the annual MAGFest celebration in National Harbor, MD, we sat down with Carl to interview him and get the scoop on the history and future of this awesome creation. We hope you give it a good read as this article has been quite a while in the making. The original debut of Mother Brain was at MAGFest 2024 – the theme was appropriately Metroid Prime. Carl’s creation was also the star of the stage that weekend, as she was shown off during the Metroid Metal concert.

Thanks again to Carl and his colleague Matt, for making such a stunning piece of work and for allowing us to scoop this awesome “cosplay” that will go down in history as one of the most epic ever!

Prime 4 Beyond: Switch 2 Edition

During today’s Direct, Nintendo announced “Switch 2 editions” of many of their popular games including Super Mario Jamboree, Pokemon Legends ZA, Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, and Kirby and the Forgotten Kingdom.

 

The biggest news out of this is Prime 4 Beyond is one of those Switch 2 Editions, which as of this writing, we don’t know if that will be available with the original Switch version of Prime 4 launches.

The Switch 2 Nintendo Direct was quite deep and many very cool announcements were made. I highly recommend you watch it here. (Prime 4 Beyond Switch 2 Edition footage appears at the 27:26 mark, or watch it below.)

As stated in the video, Prime 4 Beyond on Switch 2 will boast 2 video modes: “Quality mode” is 4K (3840p) at 60fps or “Performance mode” which is HD resolution (1080p) at 120fps.

 

Switch 2 will MSRP $449.00 USD and $499.00 USD for the Mario Kart World bundle.

Metroid Prime Visual Retrospective Launching Summer 2025

METROID AMIGOS! 2025 is shaping up to be a big year for us Metroid fans. Nintendo and Piggyback have announced Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective, a 212-page book exploring the development of the first three Metroid Prime games and Metroid Prime Remastered. Launching summer 2025, the book will feature developer insights, producer notes, and an introduction by series producer Kensuke Tanabe.

 

Created in collaboration with Nintendo and Retro Studios, the book offers a premium design with a stitch-bound cloth hardcover and high-quality art paper. Priced at $49.99, it will showcase Samus Aran in an etched metallic design on the cover.

 

Fans can expect a behind-the-scenes look at the series’ transformation from skepticism—when Metroid Prime first introduced a first-person perspective—to critical acclaim. While it won’t include details on Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, 2025 is still packed with excitement for the franchise!

Jon Wofford, the Lead UI Artist at Retro Studios, shares his excitement about the reveal trailer for “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.” He highlights the HUD, which he has meticulously crafted to honor the Metroid Prime legacy while incorporating modern updates. He credits Jordan Johnson for the UI technology and Nina Morris for her work on the scan holograms.
