MDb news since 1996.
The big news in the Metroidvania world is that Koji Igarashi, director and custodian of the Castlevania series from Symphony of the Night to Harmony of Despair, has left his position at Konami and is forming his own independent game studio. Polygon broke the story, and IGN (and likely other news sites) have exclusive interviews planned. Here is what Igarashi had to say about his decision:
I've decided to break out on my own to have the freedom to make the kind of games I really want to make - the same kind I think fans of my past games want as well. Leaving Konami was a big decision, and not one I took lightly - I've spent my entire career there, made many friends, and had a lot of great opportunities - but I hope all the gamers and fans who have supported me in the past will join me in being excited about what comes next. Wish me luck!
We certainly wish Mr. Igarashi the best of luck on his new venture! (As well as a much-deserved happy birthday - the man with the stylish hat turned 46 today!)
Based on his statements, I wouldn't be too surprised if Igarashi announces a new Metroidvania-style game sometime this week - likely to be funded on Kickstarter. (Also remember that series composer Michiru Yamane is now independent, so it would not be surprising if she was recruited.) The announcement might even come at Mr. Igarashi's much-anticipated talk "There and back again: Koji Igarashi's Metroidvania tale" on Friday, which promises "an exploration of his experiences and methodology in creating some of the most popular and influential games in the genre over the last 15 years." Calculated prediction or fan speculation?? We'll have more word after the talk.
