Looking Back: Metroid Prime Commercial
11.15.2012 - CapCom

As we start getting closer to the Wii U launch, as well as the 10th anniversary of Metroid Prime, I just wanted to take a quick peak back to the game's advertising campaign, which was pretty spectacular. This commercial first aired on November 8, 2002 in both TV broadcast and as a trailer shown in movie theaters. The film was directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow, I, Robot) and produced by Australian studio Animal Logic. The studio released a detailed summary of the production of the commercial where the visual effects supervisor Hugh Seville related the creation of the commercial to shooting a film:

By the end of the third shoot day it was obvious that we weren't making a 60-second TVC [TV commercial] for cinema release; we were actually making a small film which happened to be a commercial.

Although the commercial and interview have long since been removed from Animal Logic's website, an archive of the interview can be found here. If you weren't lucky enough to view it in theaters, there are still a few film cannisters floating around. Meanwhile, in Japan, another studio was filming a live action Metroid Fusion commercial...

Until next time...
