In the late 80's and early 90's, most gamers were familiar with Captain N the Game Master Saturday morning TV show. Though Mother Brain was the main antagonist, not a single episode featured our gal Samus. The Valiant-published Captain N Comics, however, made up for that. These comics were the first to depict a backstory for Samus, as well as long blonde hair and a greedy personality, but has since been retconned by Nintendo.
